LONDON (AP) — Go into many bookstores, and the nonfiction shelves will be dominated by men. The Women’s Prize for Nonfiction hopes to change that. An offshoot of the 28-year-old Women’s Prize for Fiction, whose past winners include Zadie Smith, Tayari Jones and Barbara Kingsolver, the new prize is open to female English-language writers from any country in any nonfiction genre. Lipscomb noted that in 2022, only 26.5% of nonfiction books reviewed in Britain’s newspapers were by women, and male writers dominated established nonfiction writing prizes. Authors from the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, the Philippines and the U.K. are on the prize longlist, chosen from 120 books submitted by publishers.

Palantir’s mythology is far too precious

Yet Palantir’s top line is only expected to grow 16% this year, according to forecasts gathered by LSEG. There’s also a risk that Palantir’s ability to secure government contracts, which account for more than half its top line, will be restrained by its politics. For example, Palantir bought about $50 million of gold bars in 2021 to prepare for unpredictable “black swan” events. Also sitting on Palantir’s balance sheet are stakes in targets of special purpose acquisition companies, which it bought in exchange for purchase orders. It doesn’t take a wizard to see that in the eyes of investors Palantir is far too precious.

Many Israelis Are Refugees From Arab Lands

Review and Outlook: The Secretary-General abandons Israel, a state the U.N. helped to create. Images: Zuma Press/AP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyAs people around the world demonstrate for Palestinian rights, we shouldn’t overlook another group of Middle Eastern refugees who also have suffered for decades but whose plight is seldom discussed: the displaced Jewish refugees from Arab lands. By 1948 an estimated 135,000 Jews lived in Baghdad, comprising one-third of the city’s population—more Jews by proportion than Warsaw or New York at the time. Iraq’s first finance minister, Sassoon Eskell , was Jewish. He insisted that the British pay for Iraq’s oil in gold rather than pounds sterling, a prescient move that salvaged the country’s finances after sterling crumbled.

A CNN broadcast with a chyron about a mass shooter in Colorado in 2021 was digitally altered and miscaptioned online as showing a headline about the suspect in the October mass shooting in Maine. Police have identified U.S. army reservist Robert R. Card as the suspect who killed 18 people in a mass shooting at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine on Oct. 25. Posts on social media on Oct. 26 said: “The Maine shooter was an Arabic Obama supporter. However, the chyron at that timestamp reads: “COLORADO SHOOTING SUSPECT BOOKED INTO JAIL TODAY,” which does not match the inauthentic headline circulating online. The CNN chyron was digitally altered and stems from coverage of the 2021 mass shooting in Colorado, not the Maine mass shooting in October 2023.

Authorities have said the suspect, Rex Heuermann, obsessively followed the case of the “Gilgo Four,” a group of four women whose remains were uncovered more than a decade ago near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. The source said one such object includes a doll found in the house but not in the children’s rooms. Though prosecutors have said Heuermann is the prime suspect in the fourth killing of Brainard-Barnes, he has yet to be charged in the case. Among the hundreds of firearms found hidden in Heuermann’s home were pistols, revolvers and semi-automatic rifles, a source said. Meta to launch Twitter challenger app Threads
  + stars: | 2023-07-04 | by ( Martin Coulter | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
July 3 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms (META.O) plans to launch a Twitter-rivalling microblogging app called Threads, days after Twitter boss Elon Musk attracted criticism by announcing a temporary cap on how many posts users can read on the social media site. Threads is expected to be released on Thursday and will allow users to retain followers from photo-sharing platform Instagram, and keep the same username, a listing on Apple's (AAPL.O) App Store showed. While alternative microblogging sites - such as Mastodon and Blue Sky - have seen an uptick in user numbers since Musk's acquisition, neither has been able to challenge Twitter. The launch of Threads represents a credible threat to Twitter under Musk, whose attempts to boost revenues and reshape the platform his own image have faced severe criticism. Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on a similar launch on the Google Play Store.

Kitt, which designs, constructs, and manages office space, just raised $8 million. Instead, he was consumed by a quirk of his Kentish Town, London, office space: a leaky AC unit. It was this experience, and the subsequent chasing of the landlord for repairs, that germinated the seed of his next business: managed office space. Kitt has a marketplace of office space to connect landlords and commercial tenants. With the rise of remote work, office space is now seen as a strategic decision, Coulson said.

A satirical article about U.S. President Joe Biden switching the Stars and Stripes flag of the United States at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington D.C. with a Pride flag was shared online as if it were factual. Posts on social media shared a photograph in which the monument, representing the U.S. victory on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima during World War Two, bears a Pride flag instead of its usual American flag (here). However, the claim stems from a satirical website and the image circulating is digitally altered. Christopher Hershey, Chief of Staff at the George Washington Memorial Parkway, maintained by NPS and where the Marine Corps War Memorial is located, said in an email that the U.S. flag at the monument has not been replaced. This allegation stems from a satirical article by website Babylon Bee.
